Fleet-based companies own their own fleet of vans that they rent out. The vehicles and service with these companies can be more consistent, but you may be getting a cookie-cutter experience with less unique options.

Camper van rental costs are around $150 on average, but this varies dramatically depending on vehicle type, location, and duration of your rental period. On top of that, there may be additional charges like cleaning fees, pet fees, or mileage fees.

So how do you go about choosing a camper van rental company? Here are some things to consider.

• Are there pick-up locations near your destination? You can often find campervan rental companies conveniently located near National Parks or other outdoors destinations, as well as clustered around nearby airports.
• How many miles are you allowed to drive the camper van per day before you have to pay overage charges? Every van rental company has a different policy as far as included mileage. If you’re planning on doing a lot of driving, make sure you know the mileage limits before you choose your campervan rental.

Private RV owners and smaller campervan rental outfits can list their rigs on Outdoorsy and connect with people looking to rent a campervan for a #vanlife adventure. Outdoorsy, in turn, provides services including customer service, roadside assistance, and basic insurance coverage.

Their site is easy to navigate and has a huge number of van rental listings, so if you’re not sure exactly what sort of vehicle looking for or you’re in a region with few campervan rental options, Outdoorsy is an excellent place to start. This platform is also a great place for van owners to earn a few extra bucks by listing their rigs.

RVShare

If you don’t find what you’re looking for on Outdoorsy, RVShare is a peer-to-peer RV rental company that allows campervan and RV owners to list their vehicles. There are rental options nationwide, so no matter where you’re looking you should be able to find a suitable camper rental for your adventure.

RVShare has a similar setup to Outdoorsy, but it’s more of a motorhome rental company so its listings trend toward the Big RV end of the spectrum. Still, you can rent vans through this platform as well, and if you’re open to exploring RV rentals for your US road trip, RVShare is a great option.

GoCamp Campervans

You can also purchase monthly or annual subscriptions to get a steep (steep!) discount on long-term camper van rentals.

Vancation.com

In theory, this peer-to-peer campervan rental site has listings in all 50 states. In practice, not so much: listings are concentrated on the west coast and the Rocky Mountains, with a smattering in the Great Lakes region, the southern Appalachians, and the Mid-Atlantic.

Vancation.com doesn’t have as many listings as some other peer-to-peer sites, but it has a definite bias toward modern custom van rentals if that’s your thing.

Mercedes Sprinter RV Rental

If you like to travel in style, the self-explanatory outfit Mercedes Sprinter RV Rental has you covered for all your Sprinter needs. You can choose between five different van layouts, and the van rental company even offers “road trip coaching” and concierge services if you’re not sure where to take your rental. 

RVezy

RVezy lists more big RVs than vans, but there are some vans available to rent. It’s one of the best campervan rental companies if you plan to travel extensively in Canada as the company has a lot of representation north of the border. 

Aiyre Pacific

Aiyre Pacific also boasts “carbon neutral” camper van rentals since they purchase carbon offsets for every mile of your campervan trip. The efficacy of carbon offsets is a whole other topic, but we like that Aiyre Pacific is at least bothering to participate in the conversation.

Moterra Campervans

Moterra specializes in 4×4 Sprinter luxury conversion vans, perfect for campervan renters who want to boondock in the outdoors and explore remote locations. Choose between three roomy layouts (two pop tops and one high roof). If road trip logistics intimidate you, Moterra offers travel packages that include campground bookings and the like, so you don’t have to worry about it.

If you fall in love with your Moterra van during your campervan trip, you can also sometimes buy used vans from their fleet. 

Cabana Seattle

Cabana Seattle offers three distinct layouts, all of which sleep up to two people (so these rental vans may not be the best choices for families). Notably, their vans feature indoor toilets and showers (yay!). 

Vanish

A campervan rental company that’s NOT based on the West Coast or in Colorado? D’oh! Vanish stands out from the crowd because of its transparent pricing, which includes unlimited miles and no extra cleaning fee.

Choose between two Ram Promaster layouts: both have gorgeous wood cabin interiors, and one of them has a full indoor bathroom (among other amenities).

Hawaii Surf Campers

Besides their location, Hawaii Surf Campers stands out because of the huge number of rental van layouts available and their stylin’ vintage VW camper vans.

You can rent add-ons like snorkel gear and camp chairs, and the company will even deliver and pick up the van from Honolulu and Waikiki for a fee. If you love your rental van, Hawaii Surf Campers also does custom conversions. 

VanCraft Sprinter Campervans

Choose between three layouts depending on your sizing needs—and if you still need more space, you can rent optional add-ons like a rooftop tent. If you’re having trouble planning your US road trip, VanCraft offers several suggested itineraries for different lengths of trips.

Unlike many campervan rental outfits, pets are allowed to come along with no additional fee. VanCraft also sells built-out Sprinters. 

Boho Camper Vans

Boho boasts a whopping 12 unique layouts (soon to be 13 when they introduce a new Jeep Wrangler conversion). This is one of the best campervan rental companies if you plan to drive a lot on your road trip because Boho gives you 200 free miles per day—twice the industry standard.

One of the add-ons you can rent alongside your van is an electric bike, which we think is pretty neat. Boho is a handcrafted campervan rental company, so you can buy used campervans from them or work with them to design your own custom conversion.

Travellers Autobarn

• Pick-up Locations: Denver, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Seattle
• Price range: $40 – $165 per night
• Types of vans: Dodge Grand Caravan, Chevy Express

Travellers Autobarn offers affordable campervans at five rental locations in California, Washington, Nevada, and Colorado. Choose between two full campervan layouts or a Dodge Grand Caravan minivan (which isn’t really a camper, but you can rent a mattress for the back or tent outside). The conversions are basic, but the prices are reasonable and include free unlimited miles, perfect for a vanlife road trip.

It’s worth noting that you have to pay an extra $45 for linens and kitchen equipment, which most camper van rental companies include in the base price.

Aclipse Campervans

• Pick-up Locations: Cincinnati, Denver
• Price range: $135 – $150
• Types of vans: Ram Promaster

Aclipse keeps their van rental rates reasonable, especially when you consider that they offer a generous 200 free miles per day (twice the industry standard). They also offer free airport pick up, drop-off and delivery around Cincinnati for a fee, which could be handy if you live locally or are flying in.

Aclipse offers three campervan layouts based on a Ram Promaster that seat and sleep up to four people; one model features a rooftop tent to create extra sleeping space. 

ProCamp by Van Horn

• Pick-up Locations: Park City, UT; Plymouth, WI
• Price range: $220 per night
• Types of vans: Ram Promaster

ProCamp keeps it simple with a flat nightly base rate of $220 and free unlimited mileage regardless of the van or the season. You can choose between six layouts, all based on a Ram Promaster. Some feature awnings, rooftop decks, and central AC and heat (a rare feature in a rental van).

Treasure Box Outdoor Rentals

• Pick-up Locations: Torrance, CA; Phoenix
• Price range: $73 – $240 per night
• Types of vans: Class C RVs; Jeep and SUV campers; Ram Promaster; teardrop trailers

Treasure Box isn’t a van-centric platform, but they have some pretty neat Ram Promaster conversions on offer. Rent a campervan here if modern interiors and full indoor bathrooms (not a given in van life and certainly not in rental van life) are your jam. 

West Coast Campervan Rentals

PacWesty

• Pick-up Locations: Bainbridge Island, WA; Palm Springs, CA
• Price range: $165 – $285 (Palm Springs) per night
• Types of vans: VW Vanagon Westfalias

PacWesty specializes in—you guessed it!—vintage Vanagon Westfalia camper van rentals, including one all-electric VW camper (the eTofino). Since these are vintage vehicles, the company typically asks you to limit your travels to within 500 miles of their Bainbridge Island depot—however, you can call to discuss the possibilities with them if you want a longer road trip. 

It’s worth noting that Bainbridge Island is a literal island that is accessible by ferry or one driveable bridge. You also have the option to begin or end your trip in mainland Seattle for an additional fee. 

In addition to camper rentals, the company also offers VW repairs, restorations, and electrification services. 

Vintage Surfari Wagons VW Rentals

• Pick-up Locations: Costa Mesa, CA
• Price range: $85 – $275 per night
• Types of vans: Vintage VW Vanagons, Bay Windows, Eurovans, Mercedes Metris

As Vintage Surfari Wagons puts it, “every bus just a little bit different,” but according to their website, they have 16 named layouts, all of which are pretty rad.

You get 100 to 150 free miles per day depending on the rig, but there’s a hard limit of 200 to 300 miles per day (again, depending on the rig. The limit is because they don’t want vintage vehicles getting driven too hard). Note that the vans take only premium gas. Vintage Surfari Wagons also does vintage van restorations. 

altCamp

• Pick-up Locations: Costa Mesa, CA
• Price range: $425 – $450 per night
• Types of vans: 4×4 Mercedes Sprinter

altCamp is not messing around—they’re asking well over $400 per night for one of their luxury campervan rentals. Choose between three Mercedes 4 x 4 Sprinter models. For your money, you get a swanky vansion with perks like an awning, a rooftop deck, and an iPad preloaded with many streaming services.

Some basic camping equipment is available for free upon request, but basic safety supplies like first aid kits and fire extinguishers are somehow advertised as PAID add-ons on their website.  

Outpost Vans

• Pick-up Location: Oceanside, CA
• Price range: $140–$210 per night
• Types of vans: Mercedes Sprinter, Ram Promaster

You can choose between four reasonably priced camper van layouts at Outpost Vans, including luxury Sprinter campervans. The conversions are heated and insulated for winter trips, and the interiors are modern and well-appointed. Like many camper van rental companies, Outpost also does custom builds.

Epoch Restorations and Adventures

LA-based Epoch specializes in restoring vintage VW camper vans and even caters some of its builds specifically to Hollywood photo shoots and film locations—though they also do traditional weekender campervan rentals. Epoch is a great campervan rental company if you’re looking for impeccable retro vibes for your USA road trip. If their unique restorations appeal to you, check out their custom conversions (they’ll work with modern vans as well as vintage). 

Roadsurfer

• Pick-up Location: Los Angeles (plus many in Europe)
• Price range: $155 – $275 per night
• Type of van: Thor Motor Coach Tellarco (Ram Promaster chassis) and Sequence (Ford Transit chassis)

Roadsurfer is a campervan rental company based in Europe. The company rents three Thor Motor Coach class B RVs in the US: the Sequence, the Tellarco, and a pop-top Tellarco. The vans have well-appointed interiors that include indoor toilets and showers.

Note that you’ll need to pay separately if you want your van rental to include bed linens. However, the price of your camper van does include unlimited daily miles. Roadsurfer just came to the US in 2022, so keep an eye on them—their offerings may expand in the coming years. 

Lost Campers

Lost Camper Vans specializes in minivan conversions—perfect for minimalists and stealth campers who love to fly under the radar. They do have Ford Transits as well if you need more living space than a minivan can offer. Pets are allowed with a modest $65 fee (lower than most camper van rental companies that allow pets). 

Trekker Vans Ford Transit Rentals

California-based Trekker Vans offers one simple layout in their low-roof Ford Transit rental vans. For $75 per day, you can get unlimited miles, and one-way road trips between LA and San Francisco are OK on a case-by-case basis. Add-ons, including rooftop tents, storage boxes, snow chains, and extra stoves, are available.

Vagabond Vans

• Pick-up Locations: Portland, OR
• Price range: $50 – $90 per night
• Types of vans: Toyota Sienna, Toyota Previa, Ford E150

Vagabond boasts some of the most affordable campervan rental prices in the Pacific Northwest for their three layouts, which are based on the Toyota Sienna, vintage Toyota Previa, and Ford E150, respectively.

Their slogan, “Clean. Simple. Fun. Not Fancy,” says it all. Their no-frills builds are indeed “not fancy,” but they include all the basic necessities you’ll need to get out and explore the country in comfort. Vagabond generously includes 150 free miles per day in the price of your camper rental, but you will have to pay an additional fee to add an extra driver. 

Bend Adventure Vans

• Price range: $239 per night
• Types of vans: Storyteller Overland Mercedes Sprinter (“Dillon”)

Bend Adventure Vans rents out one campervan layout, a Storyteller Overland Mercedes Sprinter named Dillon. Dillon is 4 x 4, making it an ideal choice for road trippers looking to explore more remote areas. Dillon has air conditioning and a microwave, as well as a roof rack and rooftop deck, an awning, a toilet, and an outdoor shower.

ROAMERICA Campervans

• Pick-up Locations: Hood River, OR
• Price range: $325 per night
• Types of vans: 4wd Ford Transit

ROAMERICA keeps it simple with just one layout, but it’s based on an awesome 4 x 4 Ford Transit. Their rental vans are kitted out for four, but for a flat fee of $10 you can get a fifth-person setup (extra linens, silverware, etc.). ROAMERICA is one of the only camper van rental companies listed that includes a free bike rack in the cost of the rental.

Black Forest Westfalias

If you want to rent a camper van with the aesthetic charms of a vintage van but the power of something more modern, this camper van rental company is worth a look. Black Forest rents out souped-up vintage Westies that have been upgraded for rugged adventures with lift kits, Ford Zetec DOHC engines, and bigger wheels with all-terrain tread. You can also rent bike racks, roof racks, canoes, propane heaters, and camping gear as add-ons. 

Peace Vans

Native Campervans

Like many campervan rental companies with multiple locations, you can arrange one-way trips. Native Campervans charges a relocation fee is $350, which sounds like a lot, but TRUST ME it’s nothing compared to some of the one-way rental rates out there, and occasionally you can save money with discounted one-way road trips to relocate vans back to their original locations.

Wandervans

If you decide to purchase a custom build, 50 percent of your rental cost will be credited toward the build, up to $1000—a great perk if you’re partially renting to decide whether a custom conversion is right for you. 

Titus Adventure Company

Dogs are allowed with no up-front pet fee, though a cleaning fee may apply if there is hair or odor in the van when you return it. You can rent biking, snow sports, paddling, and camping gear add-ons here as well. 

KuKu Campers

Kuku has six layouts based on four unique vehicles: a robust spread for a small outfit. You can enhance your road trip with a variety of paid add-ons, including some unique ones like an acoustic guitar or a skateboard. The interior layouts are basic but functional; if you like your rental van, you can commission Kuku to build you a van based on one of their build kits or your own custom design.  

Tierra Traveler

Choose between three diesel Mercedes Benz Sprinter campervan rentals at Tierra Traveler, including one 4 x4 model. Tierra offers unlimited mileage, but the company website says they “typically decline rental requests that involve cross-country travel. Unless you are renting the van for an extended period of time (3 weeks or more), our vehicles should stay in the Intermountain West.” 

They also do conversions: you can work with them to create custom conversions, or they can build you one of their rentable models. 

Campervan North America

Campervan North America has seven unique layouts and five different base vehicles. Note that van rentals out of the Las Vegas, Nevada location that coincide with Burning Man will include a $1000 Burning Man surcharge whether or not you attend the festival. 

*Though technically available in multiple regions, a recent post on Campervan North America’s Facebook page indicates that they will only operate out of the Bozeman location in 2023 during a limited season. 

Basecamper

Basecamper offers five layouts based on four distinct van models; they also do custom builds. Notably, their offerings include one AWD option (the Chevy Express 1500) that would be ideal for more adventurous road trips.

Some camper vans come with an awning, and you can rent add-ons like a cargo box, a rooftop tent, and bike and ski racks. Note that kitchen equipment is also a paid add-on—it doesn’t come standard with the van rental.

Midwest and South Central Van Rentals

Voyager Campervans

Voyager Campervans has two camper van rental layouts: one based on a Ram Promaster and one based on the smaller Ram Promaster City for those who want to keep it simple. Note that the Promaster City only sleeps two, whereas the full Promaster camper sleeps up to four. You can buy new and used vehicles through Voyager campervans, too.

Navigo

• Pick-up Locations: Houston

Navigo currently only rents one camper van layout based on the Ford Transit, though more options are theoretically to come.

This van rental company is an excellent option if you’re looking to take a longer trip, as you can get a 15 percent discount for 7- to 14-day trips and a 30 percent discount for 15- to 35-day trips. You get a generous allotment of 200 miles per day included with your rental, or you can pay $30 per day for unlimited miles.

Vander Outdoors

DC-based camper rental company Vander Outdoors rents out four campervan layouts based on three distinct van models: the Ram Promaster, the smaller Ram Promaster City, and the Dodge Grand Caravan. Note that the Promaster City and the Grand Caravan are both minivan-sized vehicles: not ideal for families, but perfect for couples or solo travelers looking to keep things simple. 

You get 150 free miles per day included with the cost of your rental (well above the industry standard of 100 miles per day), and the company considers one-way trips on a case-by-case basis. 

Gearbox Adventure

Gearbox rents campervans and also does custom builds. Their campervan rental fleet includes four campervan layouts based on Ford Transits and Mercedes Sprinters, including one AWD option. All models feature toilets, and some include hot outdoor showers.  

828 Campervan Rentals

828 offers two van layouts that sleep up to six people (so this campervan rental company is a good choice for families). It’s worth noting that their vans have more of a prefab RV look, but they offer all the necessities for your road trip, and they’re reasonably priced. You can rent bikes, backpacking gear, and more from this van rental company as well. Pets are not allowed at this time.

Sky Overland

Sky Overland rents two class B RVs and a Mercedes Sprinter passenger van. The Mountain Laurel, their Winnebago Revel 4 x 4 Sprinter model, is the most campervan-y of the two camper rental models, and the 4 x 4 is a nice perk for renters with a more adventuresome road trip planned.

However, the Boss Hog is somewhat bigger and comes equipped with an Onan generator and air conditioning. Both models have indoor bathrooms. 

SCAMPer Van

SCAMPer works with only one campervan base—the Ram Promaster—but rents it out in six unique layouts that sleep between two and four people, showcasing the breadth of possibilities contained within one humble cargo hold.

Their rental camper vans are characterized by modern interiors and distinctive orange exteriors. You can rent outdoor equipment, including bikes, kayaks, paddleboards, and hammocks from SCAMPer as well to spice up your road trip. 

Ondevan

Ondevan is a camper van rental company that rents four unique layouts based on Ram Promaster and Ford Transit vans that sleep up to four people. They will deliver vans to nearby airports for $99 and don’t charge for additional drivers. Pets are allowed for a fee. 

Northeast Campervan Rentals

Vanture Customs

Philadelphia-based Vanture rents four campervan layouts and also does custom builds on the east coast.

They appear to be more build-focused than rental-focused, but if you’re thinking of buying your own campervan, they have a rent-to-build option. If you spend more than $500 on a rental, it can be applied toward a custom build with Vanture.

Their rental campers feature gorgeous log cabin interiors with unique woodworking and craftsmanship. 

Glamp Mobile, Inc.

• Pick-up Locations: Concord, NH
• Price range: $250 – $350 per night
• Types of vans: Ford Transit

Glamp Mobile is the new kid on the block in Concord, New Hampshire. Their first (and currently only) model just debuted in the fall of 2022. 

Their Ford Transit vans are fully heated and insulated for winter adventures, have full indoor bathrooms, and are equipped with a whopping 580 watts of solar on the roof for all your van life electric needs.

You get unlimited miles with your camper van rental, and longer bookings (six or more nights) get a $50 per night discount. Notably, Glamp Mobile also allows towing with an extra fee.

Last Frontier‘s campervan rental fleet consists of four vintage Westies with original interiors, including one 4 x4 Volkswagen Syncro and one (only one) automatic transmission model. Bring a sleeping bag for shoulder season/northern lights trips because most of the vans don’t have auxiliary heaters.

River Wild Campervans

Seventy-five free miles are included with the cost of your camper van rental. That’s less than the industry standard, but it makes sense since you’re driving around a tiny archipelago in the middle of the ocean. The daily mileage allotment should be more than enough for most people’s needs.
